What Drives Cumin Seeds Prices
India and Syria traditionally dominate cumin production, with India accounting for the majority of global exports. Rajasthan and Gujarat are the main producing states, and the crop is highly sensitive to winter rainfall patterns. Unseasonal rain during the flowering stage (January-February) can devastate yields, causing 50-80% price swings.
Demand is driven by the global spice trade, food processing, and essential oil extraction. The Middle East, Bangladesh, and Western food manufacturers are major buyers. Turkey and Syria provide supply competition when their crops are good.
Seasonal Pricing Pattern
The Indian cumin harvest arrives from March to May. Prices are typically lowest from March to June during peak arrivals. They rise from July onward as stocks deplete, peaking in January-February when the market is most dependent on carryover stocks and the next crop is still uncertain. Weather events during January-February can cause sharp price spikes.
Recent Price Trend
Cumin prices have been volatile through 2025-2026, with a good 2025 harvest in Rajasthan bringing prices down from 2024 highs. Early 2026 pricing reflects cautious optimism about the 2026 crop, with traders watching winter rainfall closely.
