What Drives Psyllium Husk Prices
India controls over 80% of global psyllium supply, with Gujarat and Rajasthan as the main producing regions. Prices have been rising due to increasing demand from the health food, pharmaceutical, and functional food industries. Psyllium is the active ingredient in Metamucil and similar fiber supplements.
Climate sensitivity is high - psyllium requires specific dry conditions during harvest, and unseasonal rain can destroy the crop. The limited global production base means any supply disruption causes sharp price spikes.
Seasonal Pricing Pattern
The psyllium harvest in India runs from March to April. Prices tend to be lowest in Q2 when the new crop is processed. They rise through Q3-Q4 as stocks deplete. The market is thin enough that large orders can move prices at any time of year.
Recent Price Trend
Psyllium prices have risen approximately 52% over the past two years, driven by strong global demand for fiber supplements and a series of below-average harvests. Prices remain elevated at around $6,600/MT in early 2026.
